- In 1998, there were 240 state and local ballot initiatives
pertaining to Growth Management, 70% of which passed,
creating an additional $7.5 billion dollars for smart
growth programs.
- In 1999, 32 governors spoke of land conservation, growth
control, transportation mitigation or other sprawl concerns
in State of the State addresses or budget messages.
- Over the past three years, more than 2,000 bills have
been introduced in state legislatures to address land
use issues.
- Overall Growth Management approaches vary from state
to state. In particular:
- 12 states are implementing significant statewide planning
reforms.
- 10 states have pursued stronger local planning reforms.
- 15 states are pursuing major statewide planning reforms.
- The federal government has assumed a role in the Growth
Management debate, as evidenced by the establishment of
the Senate Smart Growth Task Force.
- According to an American Planning Association survey,
78% of American voters believe that Congress has a role
in assisting communities to address urban growth.
