What is Growth Management?
"Growth Management" is an issue that has been
defined in numerous ways by various groups and states. The
buzz words "smart growth", "sprawl",
and "Big Box" have become part of this sometimes
emotional debate, although the issue of growth planning
is certainly not new.
Simply put, growth management encompasses the community
development approaches and strategies that address the economic,
social and environmental considerations and challenges that
arise out of growth. The concept of smart growth takes on
different meanings in different communities, but generally,
it is a growth management tool used to assist communities
in planning for and accommodating growth.
The key to successful growth management is recognizing
that there is no one approach. No two communities are identical;
therefore growth management strategies and initiatives should
be developed and decided by each individual community. It
is the local government officials, economic planners, and
members of the business community who best understand the
underpinnings of their local economies, their community
needs and the cultural environment.
